Vivien Thomason - Abstract Artist
Vivien Thomason is an accomplished North London based artist and consummate colourist. Her work explores themes of feminism, the climate crisis and the human condition through richly expressive abstract paintings. Vivien has always drawn and painted, but her distinctive approach emerged through years of experimentation with liquid acrylics, developing a technique which blends dripping, swirling, and layering to create complex, emotionally resonant compositions. Her works pulse with vibrant energy and convey a sense of urgency and immediacy, offering viewers an immersive experience into her personal, and often provocative visual language. Her paintings often veer towards the Gothic, embracing shadow as much as light, yet retain a sense of playfulness and dark humour.
After a long and successful career in fashion, she now devotes herself fully to her art practice.
Her solo show Frays and Furies at HLSI Highgate Gallery in July 2025 has been noted for its bold use of colour and its ability to confront contemporary issues with beauty and defiance.
Artwave West, recent winner of the Best Gallery in the South West of England award (and on several previous occasions), will be showcasing her work from 3–31st October 2025.
Originally from Carlisle, Cumbria, Vivien's creative roots are grounded in the north of England, but her perspective is global. Her art frequently responds to world events, both political and environmental, channelling outrage, resilience and hope through a uniquely feminine lens.
Vivien's influences include Frank Bowling, Marlene Dumas, F N Souza, Odilon Reddon and Gauguin.
She has exhibited in group shows 'Oh Rose Cut in Rock' , showcasing emerging female artists in 2023 and 'Passages' in 2024 at Shipton Street Gallery and at Hornsey Original Galley. 'Frays and Furies' is her first big solo show.
