Maps

The Map paintings are poured and swirled, rather than dripped. This lends a flat smooth surface to most of them. Generally, a dozen or so liquid paint colours will be mixed before pouring, then melded and trickled for optimum effect.

These pieces are Mappa Mundi or Mappa Mare: maps of the world, land or sea which incorporate abstract faces, bird and animal motifs. The ‘faces’ or different patches of colour might be countries. They’re not tranquil paintings. Some of the ‘faces’ are eating each other. The pastel washed Mappa Mares are deliberately cracked. The state of the world, strife and the climate disaster are clearly my themes. The potentially apocalyptic future for the planet is too frightening not to be highlighted in any way possible in art.
