Witches

These paintings seek to disrupt the passive image of female muses in art by reinventing Gauguin’s Tahitian works with the young girls becoming positive, powerful and iconoclastic ‘Witches’. You wouldn’t mess with them. They’re going to create their own art.

The pieces take a particular Tahitian painting as a starting point, with the figures rendered with tangled hair and sinuous dripped limbs, but usually stray far from the originals. The colours are often close to Gauguin’s though, as they are so fabulous.
