Necklaces

The Necklace paintings were influenced by my career in fashion and jewellery and the symbolic meanings of semi-precious and natural materials. There is tremendous satisfaction in dropping liquid globules of paint onto a wet base and watching them expand and transform.

The works are generally large carved ‘beads’ layered over vertical stripes of paint, perhaps representing mourning figures lost in lament.

The Gown paintings are similar, portraying forceful women forging forward and sweeping everything negative aside in diaphanous dresses. The figures are slightly alien-like and unsettling, lacking clear faces. They also pay homage to elongated fashion plates. The technique here is slightly different with multiple layers of paint poured and drizzled over the course of several days to lend depth and drama to the gown.
